When asked, “What does the Eucharist mean to you?” talented young artists from across the Diocese responded with beautiful, poignant drawings, paintings and mixed media creations.
The True, Good and Beautiful Art Contest, presented by the Offices of Catholic Schools, Faith Formation and Youth and Young Adult Ministry, brought entries from Catholic school, public school and homeschool students.
“When looking at the artwork for the contest, I was struck by the profound understanding of the Eucharist by our young artists and their ability to share that understanding through their artwork,” said Peg McEvoy, coordinator of faith formation.
The division winners and runners-up received a cash prize from Knights of Columbus Councils #414, #2740, #4102, #12423, Father Labory Council #2724 and the Bishop Murphy Assembly #0491 Fourth Degree and Catholic socks and stickers from Sock Religious.

Eliana DeVellis
Grade 4, List Elementary School, Frankenmuth
Blessed Trinity Parish, Frankenmuth
The judges noted Eliana’s use of color and symbolism in the clouds, particularly the chalice and Host. One judge mused that it showed that “the Incarnation changes all creation.” The judges especially liked the way the painting showed a personal relationship with Jesus, as the subject walks with the Lord. The Holy Spirit, represented by a dove, completes the composition.

The judges appreciate the beauty of the sketches. They liked the life and symbolic flowers blossoming from the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Host, which reflect the Body and Blood of Christ. On the back, Mea wrote, “The Eucharist, to me, means LIFE!” We see the abundance of life reflected in the piece, as it calls to mind the parable of the seed planted in fertile ground that bears much fruit.
