Our Lady of Lake Huron celebrates century of Catholic education
On Sept. 7, 1924, community members were invited to take a tour of the newly-built Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic School in Harbor Beach. Exactly 100 years to the date, friends of OLLH school were once again invited to roam the halls of the school.
From the traditional "Prayer and Pledge" in the morning to the ice cream social in the afternoon, the celebration was centered on community. Alumni were able to see the many building improvements that have taken place over the decades, including hand-painted murals, new flooring and robust technology. They also had the chance to claim vintage jerseys and trophies telling the history of athletic achievements over the past century. The event ended with Mass thanking God for the blessing of OLLH.
“The beauty of this milestone lies in the countless lives touched and transformed through the grace and wisdom of our Catholic tradition," said Britt Mattys, OLLH principal. "Not only have generations of students had a commitment to academic excellence instilled in them, but also a commitment to faith, service and moral values.”
Alumni recalled their most cherished memories from the years they spent receiving a Catholic education. Such memories included participating in the student choir, the Christmas program, the May Crowning Mass, being taught by Servants of the Immaculate Heart (IHM sisters,) altar serving and playing in basketball games.
Looking toward the future, pastor Father Kevin Wojciechowski explains: “Jesus Christ has been and must continue to be at the heart of everything we are about at this school. I look forward to seeing more young hearts and minds be evangelized, so that future generations of disciples of Jesus can bring about transformation in our world!"
The day was more than a celebration of OLLH's vital role in the community as both a school and a place of formation. It was also a celebration of the future.
“As we honor our past, we look to the future with hope and excitement, confident that the foundation built over these past 100 years will continue to guide and inspire members of our community for generations to come," Mattys said.
